Behind the Science: Why BioClover Exists

Where It All Began

People often ask where the idea for BioClover came from.

The truth is, it wasn’t one single moment. It was the result of more than 20 years working within the beauty industry and watching skincare evolve.

As a beauty educator, I was always drawn to innovation. Long before Korean skincare became a global trend, I travelled to Asia to train in advanced skincare with a Korean educator. It was there that I saw first-hand how science, education and unique botanical ingredients could transform an industry. Every new ingredient was backed by research, a clear story and a purpose.

Years later, ingredients such as Centella asiatica became recognised around the world. Watching that happen made me stop and think.

If the world’s most innovative skincare ingredients all begin with plants, why isn’t Ireland creating its own?

Ireland is known worldwide for its green landscape, rich biodiversity and agricultural heritage, yet almost every cosmetic active used by our industry is imported. I believed we had the potential to change that.

That question became the beginning of BioClover.

Looking Beyond Traditional Botanical Research

As I studied companies such as La Mer and Loreal the biggest brands . I realised they weren’t simply selling skincare they were building a story. A proprietary complex.

They were building proprietary ingredient technologies supported by science.

That became our vision.

Rather than relying solely on published research that many ingredient suppliers have referenced for years, we wanted to generate our own scientific data. Every botanical has hundreds of published papers associated with it, but conditions, extraction methods and plant origin all influence the final ingredient.

At BioClover, we wanted to understand our own botanicals, grown on Irish soil, using our own biotechnology process.

Working with research partners, we began building ingredient dossiers from the ground up. Every few months another layer of testing is added, helping us build a complete scientific profile of each botanical.

The Results

This week marks a significant milestone in that journey.

Months of laboratory testing are beginning to reveal the unique strengths of each Irish botanical.

Our testing has shown that Red Clover demonstrates promising skin-supporting activity, including reduced IL-1α inflammatory marker expression, reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and protection of the skin barrier following SDS challenge. These findings support its potential for barrier recovery, skin resilience and skin comfort.

Nettle delivered one of the biggest surprises. It showed the broadest phytochemical profile identified in our LC-MS analysis together with the highest measurable protein content across the botanicals tested. Combined with its antioxidant profile, it has become an exciting candidate for future longevity-focused skin and hair innovation.

Gorse also exceeded our expectations, producing the strongest antioxidant performance in both DPPH free radical scavenging and FRAP antioxidant capacity. These results suggest excellent potential for protecting skin against oxidative stress and environmental aggressors.

Perhaps the most exciting discovery wasn’t that one plant was “better” than another. It was that each botanical contributes something different. Together they begin to form the foundation of a new generation of Irish cosmetic actives, each with its own scientific identity.

Building Ireland’s Botanical Future

For us, this is only the beginning.

Every new experiment, every phytochemical identified and every biological test brings us one step closer to building something that doesn’t currently exist.

Our ambition isn’t simply to sell botanical extracts.

It is to build Ireland’s first proprietary botanical biotech platform, creating scientifically characterised cosmetic actives that are traceable, sustainable and developed through a circular economy.

The long-term goal is to develop our own botanical complex, combining the strengths of Irish biodiversity with modern biotechnology and robust scientific validation.

Every week we move a little closer.

Every result strengthens our understanding.

Every discovery reinforces our belief that Ireland has the potential to become recognised not only for its beautiful landscape, but also for the next generation of scientifically supported cosmetic ingredients.

This is the journey we’re building—and we’re only just getting started.
